2025 Jerez Moto2 Test Day 3 Times: Aron Canet Tops Testing As Moto2 Preseason Ends

By David Emmett | Thu, 20/Feb/2025 - 18:37

Aron Canet has taken nearly 1.1 seconds off his own Jerez lap record to end the final Moto2 test of the 2025 preseason on top of the timesheets. Canet improved on Manu Gonzalez' time from Wednesday by over two tenths, as the Moto2 riders upped the pace. Barry Baltus made it a Fantic Racing 1-2, just four thousandths of a second shy of his teammate's best time, and four hundreths faster than Manu Gonzalez on the Dynavolt IntactGP Kalex.

Deniz Öncü was fourth fastest on the Red Bull KTM Ajo bike, and nearly three tenths quicker than Diogo Moreira on the Italtrans Kalex. Zonta van den Goorbergh has had a very strong test, putting the RW Racing bike into sixth.

Kalex have pretty much dominated the Jerez test, with Jake Dixon the first Boscoscuro bike in ninth. The Marc VDS Racing rider was six tenths off the pace of Canet.

Canet, Baltus, and Gonzalez have dominated for most of the test, consistently at the top of the timesheets, while Öncü, Van den Goorbergh and Albert Arenas have been very close throughout.

As a testament to how fast development has gone, both Canet and Baltus were fast enough on the Pirelli-shod, Triumph 765 powered Kalex bikes to have qualified on the second row for the 2010 MotoGP race, just behind Casey Stoner on the Ducati Desmosedici GP10, and ahead of Valentino Rossi on the Yamaha M1, both 800cc bikes using Bridgestone MotoGP 16.5-inch tires.

Yesterday I found a decent take elsewhere: given that Lopez is injured, Garcia is struggling so much and all their other riders are new to the machine, perhaps we haven't really seen what the new Boscoscuro can do.

My money for the title definitely is on Canet or Gonzalez. Looking at the sophomores, between Moreira, Agius and Oncu I'd pick the latter mostly due to the team he's in; only Bastianini has really made Italtrans work and Intact has never fought for a title.

Huertas has been super impressive but I'd let some races go by before handing him rookie of the year; the Moto3 rookies were always going to be down the order in this test with how tricky the transition up to Moto2 has been since the start of the Triumph era.

Interested to see what Kunii can do, wasn't he supposed to be a big prospect? What has he been up to in the last couple years anyway?

Kunii competed in and won the Asia Road Racing Championship last year. Not much info on wiki about the previous two years though.

2025 Jerez Moto2 Test Day 2 Times: Manu Gonzalez Leads Aron Canet On Day 2

By David Emmett | Wed, 19/Feb/2025 - 18:42

Manu Gonzalez is the fastest of the Moto2 class on the second day of the final preseason test at Jerez. The Dynavolt IntactGP rider became the first Moto2 rider ever to lap the track inside the 1'39s, joined at the end of the day by Aron Canet on the Fantic Kalex. Gonzalez' best lap matched the MotoGP race record from 2010 set by Dani Pedrosa on the Honda RC212V.

Belgian Barry Baltus was two tenths behind his Fantic Racing teammate, and a tenth ahead of Albert Arenas and Deniz Öncü.  Yesterday's fastest rider Diogo Moreira had dropped to sixth on the second day. Last year's Moto3 rookie sensation David Alonso ended the day in twelfth, just under a second from Gonzalez, but a strong time given he is still recovering from a shoulder injury picked up in training.

The Jerez test concludes on Thursday, after which the Moto2 and Moto3 paddock pack up and head to  Buriram for the first round of the 2025 MotoGP season.

Day 2 combined times (and fastest time of the two days of the test):

David, you mentioned at some point in the midst of his late season downturn that you had some thoughts on it. I'm curious what's going on with him, as he certainly started last season out quite strongly. I mention this because I saw him here, at the bottom of the list.

2025 Jerez Moto2 Test Day 1 Times: Diogo Moreira Leads Aron Canet

By David Emmett | Tue, 18/Feb/2025 - 19:53

Diogo Moreira has started the final test for the Moto2 class at the head of the pile, the Italtrans Racing rider two tenths quicker than Fantic Racing's Aron Canet. Canet's Fantic teammate Barry Baltus is third quickest, ahead of Manu Gonzalez on the IntactGP Kalex and Zonta van den Goorbergh on the RW Racing Kalex.

The Moto2 class sees an important change this year, with the class switching from 3.75 to 3.5-inch front rims, to bring Pirelli's front tire offering in line with their WorldSBK tires. The change should make the bikes a little easier to turn.

The 3.75-inch front rims were a legacy of the Dunlop 250cc era. The 250cc two-strokes all ran the wider rims, and when Moto2 replaced 250s and Dunlop started as sole supplier, they kept the same front tire spec.

Really just referring to the quantity, double the number of bikes they had last year. Ogura and Aldegeur really made the brand appealing.

2025 Portimão Moto2 Test Day 2 Times: Aron Canet Smashes Lap Record

By David Emmett | Thu, 13/Feb/2025 - 18:09

The second day of the Portimão Moto2 test saw lap records smashed. Aron Canet took three tenths off Manu Gonzalez' qualifying record set at the race in March last year. The Fantic Racing rider finished just ahead of Marc VDS' Jake Dixon, and IntactGP's Manu Gonzalez, who was himself two tenths under his own record.

Diogo Moreira was fourth quickest on the other Fantic Racing Kales, ahead of Barry Baltus and Zonta van den Goorbergh. Everyone was much quicker on the second day of the test.

The Moto2 and Moto3 riders now head to Jerez, for the final test of the preseason next week.

American Racing have been wind-tunnel testing instead.

Seems bizarre, at least from a timing perspective.

From American Racing Moto 2 Team #americanracingteam, Roberts and Ramirez are still on their roster. No idea why they weren't at the test. But they do have a very nice livery:

Not showing up for the scheduled test is rare to the point of being unique in my memory, when riders are healthy and bikes are ready. Budget? That would not be good.

I would appreciate hearing from those with more knowledge (or better memory?) than me. Thx.

2024 Barcelona Solidarity Moto2 Race Result: Three Promises For 2025

By Zara Daniela | Sun, 17/Nov/2024 - 12:21

The intermediate class served a tense final race of the season, followed by a particularly joyful podium, as Aron Canet celebrated his fourth victory of the year while waving the Valencian flag. Although missing out on a win by only nine hundredths of a second, Manuel Gonzalez seemed pretty happy with second, as it also secured him third in the world championship, while a final corner move on the world champion handed Diogo Moreira a maiden podium in Moto2 and the Rookie of the Year title.

Canet didn’t have it all his own way from the start, when a big wheelie off the line allowed Gonzalez to take the lead, ahead of Ai Ogura and Filip Salac, while Canet dropped to the bottom of the top 10. A chaotic couple of laps ensued, with Jake Dixon finding himself mid-field after running wide at the first corner and then crashing out on the opening lap, taking Jorge Navarro with him in the gravel. Zonta van den Goorbergh tagged the back of Celestino Vietti at the start of lap 2, the incident taking both riders out of action and pushing Deniz Öncü well wide. Once things finally settled in the lead group, Gonzalez was being chased down by Salac, Ogura and Moreira, with Canet back into the top five by lap 3. Having started 18th on the grid, Fermin Aldeguer quickly got up to 6th but was yet to serve his long lap penalty for the incident with Tony Arbolino in Thailand. Senna Agius, Alonso Lopez, Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara completed the early top 10.

By lap 4, Canet had become the main threat to Gonzalez’s lead, the poleman making quick work of Salac and Ogura and the lead finally changed hands at turn 14. While Ogura just about held onto the leaders, half a second behind the duo, Salac started sliding down the order. Aldeguer relinquished 4th position to Moreira once he served his penalty and the Spaniard dropped to 13th place. Agius was very keen to get involved in the battle for 4th against Moreira, as the duo were battling for rookie of the year honours, but with plenty of rivals behind them as well, including Salac, Garcia, Lopez, Guevara and Marcos Ramirez in the top 10. Aldeguer was back knocking at the doors of the top 10 by lap 6 and made his move on Ramirez only one lap later.

Canet was unchallenged as soon as he took the lead, enjoying half a second of space at the front, but Gonzalez was maintaining that gap, while also seemingly dropping the pursuit led by Ogura nearly a second back by lap 10. The world champion had Moreira and Agius close on his tail, with Salac and Garcia not too far back either, while Aldeguer had recovered to 8th position and was trying to close an 8-tenth gap to the fight for 3rd. Lopez did not seem to have the pace to match and had to let his teammate go, coming under threat from Guevara at the bottom of the top 10.

Canet managed to extend his advantage to almost a second by the halfway point of proceedings, while Gonzalez was managing the same gap over the fight for 3rd that was simmering nicely. Ogura was still leading that group but could not shake Moreira off and the rookie was waiting to pounce. Agius was no longer a threat as he seemed to be fading mid-race, dropping behind Salac, Aldeguer and Garcia, and although there was no immediate threat from behind, where Guevara led the next group a second back, that gap soon shrunk.

With no prospect of a change at the front, all eyes were on the final podium position, where Moreira was struggling to find a way past the world champion. Although he was yet to attempt an overtake, the airtime was welcome in showing off Ogura’s lovely golden livery. Salac didn’t seem to have the speed to get involved, dropping a second back, while keeping Aldeguer at arm’s length, probably helped by the Spaniard running out of steam after his early recovery from the long lap penalty. Aldeguer’s pace seemed to be dropping going into the final handful of laps and it allowed Garcia to take advantage and snatch 6th, but it was nowhere near enough to stay in contention for third in the championship.

Things were starting to look promising at the front going into the final 3 laps, as Gonzalez suddenly got back into victory contention, finding himself only three tenths of a second behind Canet. The Gresini rider seemed to have a little more in terms of pace in the closing stages, but getting past was another story and he never found an opportunity for a move. Meanwhile, the duo behind was getting closer too, despite exchanges finally starting between Ogura and Moreira. The rookie seemed to make a move stick at the start of the final lap but before he could catch up with the victory battle, Ogura responded at turn 10. Moreira took the final chance on offer to snatch back a podium position at the last corner, crossing the finish line only four hundredths of a second ahead of the world champion. Salac finished a lonely 5th, with Garcia scoring his best result in the second half of the season in 6th, ahead of solid recoveries from Guevara and Arenas. Aldeguer’s pace fell off a cliff in the closing laps, dropping him behind teammate Lopez and into 10th position, while Agius faded all the way down to 13th place.

If you squint through him still not being able to put a qualy lap together to save his life, you can finally start to see Izán Guevara's makings again. Yet another exceptional start, and again he didn't look like he was out of place at all afterwards, in fact he came forward. I hope he lands a seat next year and we can see more from him.

M3 to M2

Another example that the switch from M3 to M2 is a big one and not all riders can make it, let alone make the transition quickly. 7 wins in his great M3 WC and yet it has taken nearly two full seasons for his first M2 podium.

Should M3 be on bigger bikes to differentiate from Talent Cup etc and to make the step smaller?

Displacement not the only issue

IMO there is a bigger issue to Moto2 than engine displacement. MotoGP and Moto3 bikes are and feel like full fledged prototypes, while since its inception the Moto2 bikes have been somewhere in between.

Though the extra displacement jump has possibly made matters worse, the Moto3 to Moto2 transition has always been an ordeal where strong Moto3 riders (see FQ) ran the risk of losing their way, and the Moto2 to MotoGP transition has also been tough (of the Honda era Moto2 world champions, the only ones to really keep that level in MotoGP have been Marquez and Bagnaia, the latter of whom had a painful time early on either way and still has his janky moments).

2024 Barcelona Solidarity Moto2 Qualifying Result: A Slalom Through Yellow Flags

By Zara Daniela | Sat, 16/Nov/2024 - 13:41

A sunny Saturday in Barcelona allowed Aron Canet to truly shine on home soil – although unfortunately not quite as close to home as initially planned – and the Spaniard secured his sixth pole position of the season in the closing stages of Q2. The session started and ended with yellow flags, but in between all of that, Canet went a tenth and a half faster than the competition to secure pole. Manuel Gonzalez was his closest challenger but had to settle for second, while Zonta van den Goorbergh avoided both the gravel and the yellow flags to lead the way early on, before settling for the final spot onto the front row.

Jake Dixon bids farewell to the Aspar crew from 4th on the grid, while Ai Ogura was yet to put a valid time on the board until the final shootout, when he climbed into 5th. Diogo Moreira completes the second row of the grid, with Filip Salac opening row three ahead of Celestino Vietti. Jorge Navarro was one of the reasons for the early yellow flags, the replacement rider crashing at turn 10 on his second flying lap, after his first one got cancelled due to more yellow flags. He was fortunate to be able to return to pitlane and rejoin for a late attack, which helped up into 9th position.

Q1 graduate Senna Agius completed the top 10, sharing fourth row with Marcos Ramirez and Barry Baltus, while Q1 leader Alonso Lopez settled for the fifth row, in the familiar company of Sergio Garcia and Tony Arbolino. Jaume Masia opens sixth row, ahead of Albert Arenas, whose session ended early in the gravel, and early crasher Fermin Aldeguer – who also carries a long lap penalty from his last outing.

2024 Barcelona Solidarity Moto2 Practice 2 Result: Canet Deposes Navarro

By Zara Daniela | Sat, 16/Nov/2024 - 09:09

The sun was shining down a pretty cold track ahead of the final practice session for the intermediate class, but that didn’t stop Friday’s benchmark from being improved. After briefly losing top spot to compatriot Jorge Navarro, Aron Canet returned to the top of the pile in the final couple of minutes of the session, over a tenth of a second ahead of Navarro, who continues to impress on his return to racing as a replacement for Joe Roberts. Despite not quite feeling in top form, Jake Dixon climbed into third position, three hundredths of a second quicker than world champion Ai Ogura.

Manuel Gonzalez completed the top five, while Celestino Vietti stayed 6th overall, despite not improving his time from Friday and ending P2 down in 18th position. Unlike the Italian, Barry Baltus, Zonta van den Goorbergh, Tony Arbolino and Filip Salac all improved their times to join the top 10, with Fermin Aldeguer returning to action in 11th overall.

Diogo Moreira, Sergio Garcia and Marcos Ramirez all improved enough to sneak into Q2, while the likes of Deniz Öncü, Albert Arenas, Alonso Lopez and Somkiat Chantra will have to put on a show in Q1.
