Thursday News Round Up: Jerez Flooding, Ducati Engines, Pierer Out

By David Emmett | Thu, 06/Mar/2025 - 08:30

The news never stops, and so after an interesting, if not entertaining opening round of MotoGP at Buriram, a round up of a few interesting stories from around the world of motorcycle racing.

Jerez - drowned by not out

The MotoGP paddock has vivid memories of the end of October last year, when we heard about the unfolding tragedy of flooding in and around Valencia. The deaths, the destruction left a deep impact, and caused the final MotoGP round of 2024 to be moved from the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Cheste, near Valencia, to Barcelona. Fortunately the track itself was not damaged, but the infrastructure around the circuit was badly hit.

By David Emmett | Thu, 20/Feb/2025 - 18:37

Aron Canet has taken nearly 1.1 seconds off his own Jerez lap record to end the final Moto2 test of the 2025 preseason on top of the timesheets. Canet improved on Manu Gonzalez' time from Wednesday by over two tenths, as the Moto2 riders upped the pace. Barry Baltus made it a Fantic Racing 1-2, just four thousandths of a second shy of his teammate's best time, and four hundreths faster than Manu Gonzalez on the Dynavolt IntactGP Kalex.

2025 Jerez Moto3 Test Day 3 Times: Rueda Leads Kelso To End Preseason Testing

By David Emmett | Thu, 20/Feb/2025 - 18:27

Jose Antonio Rueda has ended the preseason test for the Moto3 class at the head of the timesheets, and nearly four tenths under David Alonso's Moto3 record set during P1 on the race weekend at Jerez in 2024.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider was not the only one to dive under the record: LEVELUP-MTA's Joel Kelso, Dynavolt IntactGP's David Muñoz, and Leopard Racing's Adrian Fernandez, the only rider on a Honda to dip under the old record. MT Helmets rider Angel Piqueras missed out by a sliver, being two thousandths of a second slower than Alonso's 2024 record.

Manu Gonzalez is the fastest of the Moto2 class on the second day of the final preseason test at Jerez. The Dynavolt IntactGP rider became the first Moto2 rider ever to lap the track inside the 1'39s, joined at the end of the day by Aron Canet on the Fantic Kalex. Gonzalez' best lap matched the MotoGP race record from 2010 set by Dani Pedrosa on the Honda RC212V.

2025 Jerez Moto3 Test Day 2 Times: Muñoz Ends Day 2 Of Preseason Test As Fastest

By David Emmett | Wed, 19/Feb/2025 - 18:32

David Muñoz has ended the second day of the official preseason test for the Moto3 class on top of the pile. The Dynavolt IntactGP rider was a tenth of a second under David Alonso's outright lap record, and a tenth faster than MT Helmet's Angel Piqueras and Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Jose Antonio Rueda.

After blasting their way to the top on the first day of Moto3 testing, rookies Max Quiles and Alvaro Carpe find themselves a little further down the order, in ninth and seventh respectively. Still a very strong start for the two Spaniards.

2025 Jerez Moto2 Test Day 1 Times: Diogo Moreira Leads Aron Canet

By David Emmett | Tue, 18/Feb/2025 - 19:53

Diogo Moreira has started the final test for the Moto2 class at the head of the pile, the Italtrans Racing rider two tenths quicker than Fantic Racing's Aron Canet. Canet's Fantic teammate Barry Baltus is third quickest, ahead of Manu Gonzalez on the IntactGP Kalex and Zonta van den Goorbergh on the RW Racing Kalex.

The Moto2 class sees an important change this year, with the class switching from 3.75 to 3.5-inch front rims, to bring Pirelli's front tire offering in line with their WorldSBK tires. The change should make the bikes a little easier to turn.

Jerez WorldSBK Test Round Up: Lessons Learned Despite The Rain

By Steve English | Mon, 27/Jan/2025 - 16:26

In four weeks time the lights will go out at Phillip Island and the 2025 WorldSBK season will start. The campaign is already underway, as WorldSBK is in the middle of the Iberian Winter Test season. Two days at Jerez followed by two days at Portimao are ideal for getting ready for the new season. Four days of running will be complimented by two days of testing in Australia before the first race of the season.

It’s hard to find a better way to prepare for the year. The south of Spain offers the promise of good weather and the Algarve almost guarantees it. These winter sun destinations are popular tourist traps at the time of year. What could go wrong?

Quite a bit it seems. Two days of rain-interrupted testing saw the value of the Jerez days questioned by teams. WorldSBK regulations limit teams to just ten days of testing throughout the season for their race riders. Was it better to get track time now to be ready for Australia or to save the days for later in the year? The majority of teams opted to sit it out. The expense of travelling to Jerez was balanced by the value of running.

2025 Jerez WorldSBK January Test Day 1 Times: Bulega Fastest As Testing Resumes

By David Emmett | Wed, 22/Jan/2025 - 17:48

Niccolo Bulega ended as fastest on the first day of testing for the WorldSBK class of 2025. In dry weather at Jerez, the Aruba.it Ducati rider led GoEleven's Andrea Iannone by nearly half a second. Scott Redding made a welcome return to Ducati, putting his MGM Bonovo bike into third place under a tenth behind Iannone.

Garrett Gerloff, now on the Kawasaki after BMW cut back to two bikes, was fourth fastest after the first day, finishing ahead of Axel Bassani on the Bimota, what is now Kawasaki's factory effort in World Superbikes.
