Kazakhstan MotoGP Round Finally Canceled - Misano To Replace

By David Emmett | Mon, 15/Jul/2024 - 09:53

The 2024 MotoGP calendar shuffle continues unabated. We had known for some time that the Kazakhstan round of MotoGP was to be canceled due to a range of issues at the Sokol International Racetrack. But Dorna had struggled to find a replacement circuit to host a race.

That struggle is at an end. Today, the FIM announced that Misano is to take the place of the Kazakhstan GP on the calendar. The Emilia-Romagna GP is to take place from 20th-22nd of September.

This means that there will be two rounds in three weeks at the Italian circuit. The Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini is due to take place on the weekend of September 6th-8th, with a MotoGP test due on the Monday after the race. Now, the paddock will remain in Italy, and return to the track after a weekend off.

The race in Misano is likely to pose significant logistical challenges. Everything will have to be packed up on Sunday night ready for shipping, to make the long trek to the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit on the Indonesian island of Lombok. There, the paddock will reassemble for the Indonesian round of MotoGP do to be held from 27th-29th September.

Several alternatives had been suggested to replace Kazakhstan. Initially, it looked like Qatar would host another MotoGP round, but Qatar appears to have declined that opportunity. There were rumors that Brno would make a return to the calendar, and there were even talks that we could see Valencia make a second appearance. But in the end, Dorna have had to resort to a second round at Misano.

You can find the complete and, according to the FIM, final 2024 MotoGP calendar here.

The official announcement appears below:

FIM Grand Prix World Championship
Kazakhstan GP cancelled, Misano to host Emilia-Romagna GP

The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports announce the cancellation of the Grand Prix of Kazakhstan. Operational and logistical issues arising from the earlier flooding across the region have rendered the event impossible to hold in 2024.

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will instead host the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix from the 20th to the 22nd of September.

MotoGP™ is excited to stage a second event at the iconic Adriatic venue, giving the passionate Italian fanbase a further opportunity to see the world’s most exciting sport in action. The Italian GP earlier this season became the second best attended Grand Prix ever at that venue, and tickets for the San Marino GP, MotoGP™’s first visit to Misano this season, are already forecast to sell out soon.

Thank goodness it’s not valencia! 🙏 Once a year is already too many visits.
I imagine it would be spectacular for me on a cbr600rr but it’s absolutely daft for professionals on big bikes and my goodness, it is always such a dull affair for the season finale. Great for spectating and riding but dreadful for racing.

So no more corrupt authoritarian petro-state nonsense right?

Right?
Good Lord I can’t wait for a grown up at Liberty Media to fix the season Calendar, this year has been a joke.

Liberty Media merrily sent F1 from China to Florida to Italy (and Monaco) to Canada to Spain in 60 days. Later in the year they'll go from Italy to Kazakhstan to Singapore in 3 weeks, then onwards to Texas. I'm not sure they're the solution to Moto GP's calendar problems. Plus F1 has plenty of failed venues in it's history.

I think there is a fun interest in two Rounds in a row at a circuit. Everyone has reached their set up 2nd time. Nicely rubbered in. The paddock should be relaxed and rested. Misano? Not so bad! (Did not expect Borat-land to make a niiice race, yes?!). It may help the struggling manus, nearly a test-race to sort bikes?

Steve Reddy, don't mean to knock Gardner (poor guy had his share!) but one perspective is that Yamaha don't really have another option after Cal to call up w recent experience on the tires/bikes. Their Japanese Superbike riders are next. (Nudge to Blue, in this era TWO on pace Test/replacement riders might be the model? More so next year as the 2027 bike takes shape? You look to be signing Miller for Pramac, good step that might cover the development need. Who else is a Dani like option? And Honda, add Taka to Bradl?).

I guess there are worse places to spend a few weeks.

Good thing they have decided. Wondering why they didn't run two back to back and give the teams more time. Time to bump out,  travel and set up in Indonesia.

Monster lolly water Yamaha is giving Remy Gardner another go at Silverstone. Apparently Alex Rins should return. But Cal Crutchlow is injured. Bodes well for RG87. Someone at Yamaha likes him.

There’s another event at the circuit the weekend between the 2 races, so back to back is not possible.

They’ll even have to pack up all their stuff and move it all back in for the 2nd weekend. Then again, if it was 2 races at different venues, they would have to do that anyway.

This is so shocking! Maybe Dorna got to keep some fees or something, but this makes the championship look very amateurish.

Nobody has yet explained why when we had for the first time ever an official reserve circuit (Hungary), that it was not employed.

Agreed re Valencia, one is indeed too many.  Sad we still are not going to Brno, what a magnificent circuit!  Misano is meh, ok, but not great.  Might have been good to run the second round there in the original direction!

Brno has changed ownership and would have been a great replacement venue for Kazakhstan, except there is still a need for new asphalt. Crutchlow's hand injury suggests Yamaha needs another test rider. The analytical Dovizioso said he was available, yet only silence on that front. Maybe A. Fernandez is angling for that position. With wildcards he could still be in the show part time.

Kaza...what?

I'd suggest people go and watch the Topcat in action this past weekend and forget about this circuit drama.
