If you want to chat all things MotoGP on a more informal basis than in the comments, then head on over to the MotoMatters Discord server. Once you have set up a Discord account, you can log in using the link shown below.
I spend a lot of my time over on Discord, as it is a much more pleasant place to discuss racing topics. You'll find me there, and I will be posting links to news stories and quick news updates during race weekends as and when they happen.
Discord, for those who are not familiar, is a mostly text-based private discussion forum, where invited members can discuss topics they are interested in. There is a comprehensive introduction on the Discord website.
Sign up as a MotoMatters.com subscriber to enjoy exclusive content, plus access to the MotoMatters community on Discord.

It's not compulsory. It's an additional benefit. The website will remain the primary focus. You can't do in-depth analysis on Discord.
I typically
shy away from most social media sites, but will this be a text, or video, based environment?

Discord is text-based. You can do voice chats, but I have little interest in doing that, except perhaps on very rare occasions.

Vibes
Dave, I signed up on Discord, what are "vibes" and how do I know if the are on/off?

Discord primer?
If anyone has a link to a Intro to Discord for Dummies, I am one. Tried twice, strike two! Not intuitive, frustrating as heck, couldn't get it off the ground. But would like to join in the chat.
:)
Addendum, this 24 min video looks a help for the luddite folks like me...hope it does for others.

There's a FAQ on the Discord…
There's a FAQ on the Discord website which might help. There are sections on joining Discord, logging in, chatting in channels, and more.
Basically, a server is a private space to hang out in. Channels are different topics. It's a cross between a forum and WhatsApp or text group chat.
The basic process is sign up, log in to the website (or app, but the website works fine), check that you are in the MotoMatters MotoGP Chat server, type to chat in the #motogp channel (or #worldsbk channel for WorldSBK, or #general for other things).

You know that person in the room that everyone smiles politely at but suddenly find they have important business to attend to elsewhere when they try to join in the conversation? That.
Discord Server
When I try to accept your Invitation via my iPad the result is “Safari cannot open page because address is invalid”!!!
Success!
I think it works! Pretty good going for a septuagenarian.
my fear
one of the many reasons I love this site is the comments of fellow subscribers who clearly know more than I,
David's articles are fantastic, but I'm always coming back to see new comments. IMHO this will kill that in much the same way that compulsive posters killed the forum
glass half full mate, glass half full..

Horses for courses
The thing about social media is that different formats suit different platforms. Discord is for immediate reaction and short posts. The website comments tend to be much longer, and more considered. That is far less suited to Discord.
So my hope and expectation is that we will continue to get outstanding comments here on the website, but more quick immediate chat on Discord.
Data discord collects
David,
Help us understand a little bit more about this service. A link to their privacy and data collection policy is here. https://discord.com/privacy/#3
Looks like we’re going to be giving discord a lot of personal data, and some of us are bothered by that.
Thanks,
Bill

Discord only collects data…
Discord only collects data if you access the service. There is no data exchange or link between the motomatters.com website and Discord. So no data from this website is passed to Discord.
In fact, the motomatters.com website collects no information beyond the information you use to register and (some of) the information you use to purchase a subscription. A cookie is stored on your computer with your logged in status. There are no advertising or tracking cookies on here (except on pages with embedded media, e.g. for Soundcloud and YouTube on the podcast pages).
I would emphasize again, the Discord server is an additional extra. You don't have to use it if you don't want to. But replicating the functionality of Discord on this server is not feasible for me (unless I set up an IRC server...) so I use Discord instead. But there is no obligation for anyone else to use it.

While signing into discord, someone else's email (jeffreysomething) popped up in the autofill window. That was weird.

That is weird, but that has to come from your own computer. No data sent from here. Only the invite link, which is universal for everyone. Usually, those autofill email addresses are collected locally on your own device, not centrally.
Nice!
This is a nice perk for those that watch live.
There used to be a motorcycle cafe in Acton, Massachusetts us bikers would gather at and they'd have MotoGP on. It was nice to hang out with others that enjoyed racing. Rossi was a rookie on the 500s that year & Roberts Jr won.
I don't usually watch live, but maybe I will now.
Thanks David!
PS I bet Discord is easier for most than IRC would be! Works better on a phone too
