2025 Portimão WorldSBK January Test Day 1 Times: Razgatlioglu Back On Top

By David Emmett | Tue, 28/Jan/2025 - 17:40

Toprak Razgatlioglu ended the first day of the Portimão WorldSBK test as fastest on his first day back in the saddle of his BMW M1000RR. Despite an injured right index finger, which he hurt in a training crash and which forced him to wear a special glove, the reigning world champion mastered rather tricky conditions, with a lot of wind and a track that was still damp in patches, to just nip ahead of Bimota's Axel Bassani.

2025 Jerez WorldSBK January Test Day 1 Times: Bulega Fastest As Testing Resumes

By David Emmett | Wed, 22/Jan/2025 - 17:48

Niccolo Bulega ended as fastest on the first day of testing for the WorldSBK class of 2025. In dry weather at Jerez, the Aruba.it Ducati rider led GoEleven's Andrea Iannone by nearly half a second. Scott Redding made a welcome return to Ducati, putting his MGM Bonovo bike into third place under a tenth behind Iannone.

Garrett Gerloff, now on the Kawasaki after BMW cut back to two bikes, was fourth fastest after the first day, finishing ahead of Axel Bassani on the Bimota, what is now Kawasaki's factory effort in World Superbikes.

Pit Stops To Be Compulsory For Both WorldSBK And WorldSSP At Phillip Island Round

By David Emmett | Wed, 22/Jan/2025 - 13:53

The WorldSBK series will once again see mandatory pit stops for the WorldSBK and WorldSSP classes, as was the case during the 2024 round. The combination of the new surface at Phillip Island, laid ahead of the 2024 season, the high speeds around the circuit's long left handers, and the abrasiveness of the asphalt place very high loads on tires and generate exceptionally high temperatures. Last year, Pirelli said that they had seen 160°C in pit lane, which translates to nearly 200°C on track.

WorldSBK is also fortunate to visit Phillip Island in February, at the height of the Australian summer. That raises both air and asphalt temperatures, which puts more heat into the tires.

EU Launches Phase II Investigation Of Liberty/Dorna Deal, Purchase Delayed

By David Emmett | Thu, 19/Dec/2024 - 16:58

The EU Competition Commission has launched a so-called Phase II investigation of Liberty Media's purchase of Dorna Sports. The Commission raised concerns over the market power the proposed purchase would give Liberty over broadcasting rights in the national TV markets in a number of EU member states.

The concern of the Commission is that the acquisition could allow Liberty to raise prices for the broadcasting rights of MotoGP and F1 in some countries. The Commission noted that F1 and MotoGP are each other's most direct competitors, and Liberty having control of both would reduce competition by not allowing broadcasters to choose between one or the other, or both.
