2025 Provisional MotoGP Calendar: 22 Races, Kazakhstan, India Out, Hungary, Brno In

By David Emmett | Thu, 26/Sep/2024 - 08:14

The 2025 MotoGP calendar has been published at last, at least in its provisional form. The calendar contains 22 rounds, starting on March 2nd at Buriram in Thailand, and ending as usual at Valencia on November 16th.

The calendar looks a little different this year, in several different ways. Firstly, Qatar is now the fourth round, being held in mid April, rather than the first round. Argentina and Austin follow the season opener in Thailand, with MotoGP heading back to Europe after Qatar.

Jerez and Le Mans are in their traditional places, at the end of April and the middle of May respectively, before MotoGP heads to Silverstone, and a much earlier date for the British GP at the end of May. From the UK, the series heads back to Spain, to Aragon, again a much earlier race at the beginning of June. From Aragon, the series heads to Mugello in the middle of June, in a race that is back-to-back with Assen.

Aragon MotoGP Race Round Up, Part 2 - Acosta Makes A Step, Aprilia Goes Backward, And Rins Suprises

By David Emmett | Wed, 04/Sep/2024 - 15:05

Marc Márquez' return to victory and the collision between Alex Márquez and Pecco Bagnaia ate up a lot of attention at the Motorland Aragon GP. Understandably so. Márquez winning after 1043 days and leaving the safety of the Repsol Honda factory team for the impoverished Gresini Ducati squad is huge. And the 13 or 16 points Bagnaia lost as a result of the crash could potentially end up making a difference in the championship.

But there was a lot more happening during the MotoGP race at Aragon. Pedro Acosta returned to the podium during a sprint race for the first time since Mugello, and for the first time since Austin in a Sunday grand prix. Though Acosta earned his sprint podium, his Sunday podium was gifted to him when Bagnaia and Márquez crashed out ahead of him.

Yet this podium is significant. It is the result of reverting to a setup with which Acosta had booked so many successes earlier in the season. A disastrous outing at their home GP at the Red Bull Ring had convinced KTM that something needed to be done, and by abandoning the changes which offered potential advantages for a setup they understood and knew would be more consistent allowed Acosta to ride like he wanted to again.

Back to the future

Post Aragon MotoGP News Round Up: Hungary, Alonso, Bautista In; Portimão, Zeelenberg, Baumgärtel Out,

By David Emmett | Tue, 03/Sep/2024 - 16:29

The fact that the races at the Motorland Aragon circuit were so eventful rather overshadowed the fact that a lot of news emerged during the weekend. In part perhaps because of the way it sorted of leaked out rather than being announced. So here's a quick rundown of some of the things we learned.

Calendar shake up

For the past decade or so, the MotoGP calendar has looked pretty predictable. Circuits may come and go, but the shape of the calendar has looked largely unchanged.

That looks set to change in 2025. Apart from starting in Buriram, Thailand, instead of Qatar, there races entering the calendar and established races being moved around. Last Wednesday we learned that Brno is set to be added to the schedule, though a date for the race is yet to be announced. In previous years, Brno has been back to back with the Austrian round at the Red Bull Ring, but talk around the paddock has it that this will not be the case in 2025.

Aragon MotoGP Sunday Subscriber Notes: Marc Marquez' Long, Hard Road Back

By David Emmett | Mon, 02/Sep/2024 - 23:39

In the summer of 2023, Marc Márquez began to ponder taking the biggest gamble of his career. It had been three years of misery. First, breaking his arm in that fateful crash at Jerez at Turn 3 in July 2020, when MotoGP returned after the start of the pandemic. Then trying to ride again just three days after surgery to plate the humerus he broke.

That was one of the worst decisions of his life, nearly ending his career and leaving him in pain for the best part of two years. Three more surgeries followed, each one of which risked damaging the nerves which run down the humerus, which could have ended his career. He had a new plate fitted, then another surgery to deal with an infection in the bone, and finally one last radical operation to try to fix the issues caused. Surgeons would break the humerus again, and rotate the lower part through 30 degrees, back to its original position, and fix it in place again.

Editor's Blog: Travel Logistics and an Aragon Roundup

By David Emmett | Sun, 01/Sep/2024 - 20:16

It's a hectic few weeks for me. Back at home from Austria it was off to Aragon after a couple of days. And with Misano 1 back to back with Aragon, the timing of travel and flights is tricky. What this means is that I have to be off to bed early to drive to Barcelona to catch a flight, leaving me little time to write my Sunday subscriber notes from Aragon.
