Portimão WorldSBK Test Round Up: Toprak Is Back, Redding Is Hungry, Rea Turns To New Crew Chief

By Steve English | Mon, 10/Feb/2025 - 10:00

The WorldSBK paddock decamped to the Iberian Peninsula for four days of winter testing. Unfortunately, rain and wind followed the paddock from Jerez to Portimão. Teams were severely hampered with running at both tests and the majority could only use two days of running to try and get ready for the start of the coming campaign.

While the tests wasn’t as efficient as manufacturers would have hoped it certainly wasn’t a waste of time. The majority of the field felt that enough was done to be ready for Phillip Island, because we’ll have two days testing at the thrilling Australian venue, and a mid-March test at Portimão will allow them to get fully ready for the start of the European season at the Portuguese venue.

BMW’s talisman is back on track

After missing the Jerez test a week previously Toprak Razgatlioglu was back on track at Portimao. The Turkish rider arrived mid-afternoon on Monday and was immediately the centre of attention. Speaking to him as he left the garage he was relaxed but obviously concerned about his finger injury.

Jerez WorldSBK Test Round Up: Lessons Learned Despite The Rain

By Steve English | Mon, 27/Jan/2025 - 16:26

In four weeks time the lights will go out at Phillip Island and the 2025 WorldSBK season will start. The campaign is already underway, as WorldSBK is in the middle of the Iberian Winter Test season. Two days at Jerez followed by two days at Portimao are ideal for getting ready for the new season. Four days of running will be complimented by two days of testing in Australia before the first race of the season.

It’s hard to find a better way to prepare for the year. The south of Spain offers the promise of good weather and the Algarve almost guarantees it. These winter sun destinations are popular tourist traps at the time of year. What could go wrong?

Quite a bit it seems. Two days of rain-interrupted testing saw the value of the Jerez days questioned by teams. WorldSBK regulations limit teams to just ten days of testing throughout the season for their race riders. Was it better to get track time now to be ready for Australia or to save the days for later in the year? The majority of teams opted to sit it out. The expense of travelling to Jerez was balanced by the value of running.

OPINION: Once More With Gusto - No, BMW Aren't Going To Race In MotoGP

By David Emmett | Sun, 29/Dec/2024 - 18:09

As the KTM saga rumbles on, it churns up an incredible amount of speculation and rumor in its wake. And as sure as bears performing their ablutions in the outdoors, the name of BMW pops up as a potential candidate to take over KTM's spot on the MotoGP grid.

I realize I am offering a giant hostage to fortune here, but I can confidently predict this will not happen. I have already written two pieces this year explaining why I do not believe BMW will enter MotoGP, but KTM's insolvency means more people asking me whether BMW are set to take their place. The answer, I still believe, is no.

The good news

But first, a quick update on the situation around KTM. Gerald Dirnbeck at Motorsport-Total quotes Austrian newspaper Der Standard, who have a report on the latest developments.

The good news for the people working at KTM is that their December salaries will be paid as promised. The good news for the company is that the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), in a report commission by KTM for their insolvency proceedings, sees plenty of potential for KTM's motorcycle manufacturing arm. They report that they expect to see annual growth of more than 10% in what they describe as KTM's 'core markets', and stable growth of 3.5% in the off-road segment, where KTM is the undisputed market leader with a market share of between 40% and 60%.

OPINION: Does MotoGP Really Need More Than Five Factories?

By David Emmett | Mon, 09/Dec/2024 - 17:39

It is almost a ritual at this point. Every few months, a news story or rumor will pop up suggesting that a major motorcycle manufacturer is considering joining MotoGP. Usually after a senior executive has given a wide-ranging interview on a host of subjects relating to their brands, and at the end is asked, "oh, what about MotoGP?" and doesn't immediately reject the idea out of hand.

Earlier this year, it was BMW which was going to enter MotoGP. That theory grew off the back of two pieces of news. Firstly, an interview with the new CEO of BMW Motorrad, Markus Flasch, in which he was asked about MotoGP, and said that he would not rule it out. And secondly, the news that BMW had bought Suzuki's MotoGP data.

The latest set of rumors (as I referred to last week) refer to an interview given by Suzuki Motor CEO Toshihiro Suzuki about their position in the market and range of models. Suzuki-san was asked if there were any plans to enter MotoGP, and responded that though they were proud of having won the MotoGP title in 2020, "it doesn't make much sense if we don't have a complete and varied range of models to offer all motorcyclists. And I don't think we are in this situation at the moment."

Feed the beast

That hasn't stopped the MotoGP media from launching a barrage of stories stating that Suzuki is considering a return to premier class racing. The explanation is fairly simple. It is December, and very little is happening in the world of motorcycle racing. But the insatiable hunger for content must be filled (and for websites which rely on internet advertising income, the existential need for clicks and ad impressions), and so yarns get spun out to seem as large and significant as possible.

MotoGP Silly Season Round Up: Miller, Garcia, Roberts, Ogura, And Maybe BMW?

By David Emmett | Mon, 12/Aug/2024 - 21:01

At Silverstone it looked like the MotoGP Silly Season was pretty much over. We thought we knew who would be filling the seats still empty. Miguel Oliveira would be heading to Pramac Yamaha, where he would be joined by a rookie, either Sergio Garcia, Alonso Lopez, or Tony Arbolino. Ai Ogura would be off to Trackhouse Aprilia. And Takaaki Nakagami would have to wait and see whether Somkiat Chantra has decided to move up to MotoGP and take his place yet. Jack Miller looked to be out of a job, and off to World Superbikes.

But this year's Silly Season is living up to its name, with all of that going out of the window. Both Manuel Pecino and Ivo Schützbach at Speedweek, and Motorsport.com's Oriol Puigdemont reported last week that the second Pramac seat will not be going to a rookie after all. According to Puigdemont, Miller and his manager Aki Ajo had a meeting with Pramac boss Paolo Campinoti at Silverstone. A more significant attendee was Dorna's Chief Commercial Officer Dan Rossomondo.

OPINION: Are BMW About To Enter MotoGP? Maybe...

By David Emmett | Wed, 07/Aug/2024 - 22:48

The reason there are currently only 22 bikes on the MotoGP grid, rather than the 24 Dorna has always said is the number they want, is simple. They have been keeping two slots open on the grid for another manufacturer ever since Suzuki pulled out of the series at the end of the 2022 season.

The phrase "another manufacturer" is a euphemism. The other manufacturer in question is BMW. Dorna have been trying to persuade BMW to enter MotoGP for decades. They came close shortly after the start of the four-stroke MotoGP era, with BMW building and testing a 990cc triple. But ever since then, BMW have been content to be an official partner, with German manufacturer supplying safety vehicles, sponsoring the BMW M Award for the best qualifier, and providing extensive sponsorship of each event.

Dorna took another shot at persuading BMW shortly after Suzuki pulled out at the end of 2022. Reportedly, BMW were offered Suzuki's entire MotoGP program (bikes, trucks, equipment) for free, if they agreed to enter MotoGP. BMW declined again.

Dropping a hint?

Rumors of a BMW entry into MotoGP persist. Speculation was reignited on the basis of comments by new BMW Motorrad CEO Markus Flasch in an interview with preeminent German magazine Motorrad. In a long interview about the current state of the Bavarian manufacturer, and the importance of the new flagship R1300GS launched earlier this year, Flasch was asked about MotoGP.

Assen MotoGP Friday Round Up: Impeccable Pecco, And Pramac Gets New Threads

By David Emmett | Sat, 29/Jun/2024 - 00:08

Fridays at Assen are always exceptionally busy for me. Being based in The Netherlands, it's my home race, and so I have a number of obligations which come on top of my normal duties of trying to encapsulate what just happened at the race track. So today's round up will of necessity be shorter and more perfunctory than usual.

So let's start with the most obvious thing: Pecco Bagnaia is clearly the fastest at Assen. He is in the groove, and everything is going his way. "For me, it’s just because I started with a good feeling. The others will improve for sure," the Ducati Lenovo rider told us.

The work done during the season, the lessons learned and refinements made to setup, are all starting to pay off. "All the work done from the start of the season is starting to give us more feeling to start on Friday," he said. At Jerez, they had made a big change to the setup, and since then he had found the right feeling with the bike. "I wasn't able to feel well with the bike and what we did in Jerez was a big change and from that moment we started to be always competitive from the Friday."

Lessons from the past

This was an improvement over 2023, Bagnaia explained. "Last year I was starting behind every time, every time starting with big things to do on the bike. It was not easy. So these kind of things is helping a lot to start in a weekend and already know which way to take."

The Merry-Go-Round Spins Faster: Where We Are Now With The MotoGP Silly Season

By David Emmett | Mon, 24/Jun/2024 - 17:16

By the time you read this article, there is an 80% chance that the information contained within it will have been superseded. We are in the middle of MotoGP Silly Season, and in the run up to the series resuming in Assen after a short break, announcements are being made. As we saw with the news that Aprilia have signed Marco Bezzecchi to a "multiple-year deal", which is the latest fad in contract press releases, and is code for a two-year deal with options to extend. And usually, options to terminate early, though those are almost never invoked.

So where does the Bezzecchi announcement leave us? As I have written previously, and we have discussed on the Paddock Pass Podcast, Bezzecchi was part of a chain of rider (and team) movements expected to take effect before the next summer break ends and MotoGP reconvenes at Silverstone. There are more moves in the pipeline, and some may even come this week.

First, an overview of what is available and what isn't. The signing of Bezzecchi leaves just two factory seats (tentatively) open. Bezzecchi will partner Jorge Martin at Aprilia, Marc Marquez joins Pecco Bagnaia at the factory Ducati Lenovo squad, and Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder are KTM's new Red Bull Factory Racing superteam.
