2024 Portimão January WorldSBK Test Day 2 Times: Razgatlioglu Beats Bulega, Morbidelli Crashes

By David Emmett | Tue, 30/Jan/2024 - 17:40

Toprak Razgatlioglu ends the European round of testing for the WorldSBK class on top of the pile. The SMR BMW rider was one of four to smash the existing pole record, set by Jonathan Rea back in 2022.

Razgatlioglu's fast time brought to an end Nicolo Bulega's stranglehold on winter testing, the Aruba.it Ducati rookie ending second behind the BMW of Razgatlioglu, just under a tenth slower. Alex Lowes found a fast lap at the end to grab third on the Kawasaki, ahead of Remy Gardner on the GRT Yamaha, who was also fastest Yamaha.

Razgatlioglu's factory BMW teammate Michael van der Mark was fifth fastest overall, just over four tenths slower than his teammate. The two Pata Yamahas followed, Andrea Locatelli a little faster than Jonathan Rea, with Danilo Petrucci ending eighth on the Barni Ducati.

The VR46 Riders Academy and Gresini squad continued their training time, the Marquez brothers once again riding without transponders, and so not registering a time. Pecco Bagnaia was once again fastest, ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli. Morbidelli had a big crash at Turn 9 late in the afternoon, bringing out the red flags. The Italian was taken to the medical center, but no serious injury was found. He has a week to recover before taking to the track for the Sepang test.

The WorldSBK paddock now pack up and head to Australia, for the final test of the season ahead of the opening round from 23rd to the 25th of February.

Tire/bike questions re: the MotoGP boys

The Ducati riders are using the 1103cc V4S and not the 998cc V4R? Crash.net had an article that Marquez was on the R but was contradicted elsewhere. And all the MotoGP boys are all using Michelin slicks (Power Slick 2s?) and not the same Pirellis as WSBK? And what about Valentino? I know the SC0, etc. are commercially available and seem like the more popular option than the Michelin slicks for average Joes. Really interesting to see the times between the superstock(ish) bikes and the WSBKs, and curious about what the differences are. RIP MIE Honda, even Marini on a stock thousand (999cc) was faster, ouch....

Viva The Turk flying Bavarian!

Yes, it was on Softs grabbing a flyer, but he was fast throughout. BMW is trying a brand new swingarm out for him to help exploit rear drive grip. To early to "be convinced," but plenty of argument for optimism eh?

Beautista has to add 13 lbs of lead to his bike. That will be noticeable. Rea looks quite happy too, good news. Then we have a few interesting Ducati mounted portenders too.

(Re pace, the Supersports are fast these days too! Curious what a Ducati 1098 Twin from a few yrs back would run relative to this 950 "middleweight.")

The horses are on the track!

:)
