2024 Most World Supersport Race Two Result: Track Limits Matter

By Jared Earle | Sun, 21/Jul/2024 - 13:55

The temperature hit 33ºC at the start of the nineteen lap race with the grid determined by lap times in yesterday's race.

Yari Montella led Adrian Huertas and Stefano Manzi into turn one but Lucas Mahias and Bahattin Sofuoglu crashed out into turn one with Sofuoglu's MV Agusta flipping over forwards as if the front brake locked. Anupab Sarmoon was handed a penalty for irresponsible riding.

Jorge Navarro took advantage of his fast lap in yesterday's race giving him a good grid position, taking fourth place until Valentin Debise took it from him on the second lap. Stefano Manzi set a 1'35.083 in third place in the middle of the five-bike train fighting for the lead.

Three tenths of a second covered the leading three bikes at the start of lap four and Manzi had to back out of a turn one pass attempt as Huertas tried to pass Montella in front of him. Navarro couldn't keep up with the four bikes ahead, dropping to a second behind fourth-placed Debise. Huertas took the lead before the southern loop and Manzi passed him into turn fifteen. At turn twenty, Montella took second place back, but not without conceding the inside line to start lap six in the lead. Debise had better drive onto the straight, having an uninterrupted line out of the last corner, and he took third place from Montella as Huertas escaped in the lead. Sarmoon, out of the points in twentieth place was handed a ride through penalty for ignoring his double long lap penalty and would eventually be excluded from the race.

With the fight behind him giving him time to focus on his laps, Huertas stretched his lead to a second over Manzi by lap eight while Manzi couldn't escape from Debise and Montella. Tom Edwards crashed out as Kaito Toba pitted in with a mechanical issue.

At half race distance, the middle of lap nine, Adrian Huertas led Stefano Manzi by around about a second with Valentin Debise and Yari Montella a second further back. Jorge Navarro was three seconds off the fight for the podium with Federico Caricasulo over a second and a half off him.

As the temperature climbed to 35ºC and two thirds race distance was covered, Huertas and Manzi were settled into the top two places, with Debise holding off Montella in third place. Piotr Biesiekirski, dumped his bike in the middle of turn two, but the Marshalls cleared it off the track before the fight for points closed up on the start of the lap and Biesiekirski was taken to the medical centre.

With four laps left, Huertas led Manzi by over two seconds with Debise holding off Montella almost a second and a half behind. With three laps left, Huertas matched Manzi's fastest lap by a thousandth of a second, two and a half seconds in the lead. Debise kept fending off Montella's attacks.

Debise made a mistake at the end of the penultimate lap, going wide in turn twenty, and Montella took advantage to take third place into turn one, but Debise used the blue paint into turn one to take back third place, giving the stewards something to think about. A few turns later, Montella ploughed into the rear of Debise's Yamaha and scuttled off the track, recovering with just a loss of two seconds.

Adrian Huertas won with a lead of almost three seconds over Stefano Manzi with Valentin Debise over two and a half seconds behind and the cloud of a "podium over review" notification. Yari Montella was sent to parc fermé as Debise lost one place for taking a "shortcut on turn 1 & 2", exceeding track limits on the last lap.

With his sixth consecutive win, Adrian Huertas extended his championship lead over Yari Montella to forty six points and fifty three over Stefano Manzi.
