2024 Jerez World Supersport Race One Result: Several Laps Down? Race For Lap Times

By Jared Earle | Sat, 19/Oct/2024 - 14:05

Another title could be decided today, with World Supersport up for seventeen laps of 24ºC weather in Spain. Adrian Huertas is favourite to take the title over Stefano Manzi, needing just five points to secure the championship. Federico Caricasulo was sent to the back of the grid for a tyre pressure infringement.

Jorge Navarro got the jump on Adrian Huertas and Yari Montella pushed Huertas back to third place. Huertas went wide into turn six and let Stefano Manzi and Tom Booth-Amos past. Montella took command of the lead ahead of Manzi who pushed Navarro back to third. Booth-Amos swapped back and forth with Huertas. Manzi took the lead from Montella and started lap three in the lead. Tom Booth-Amos set a 1'43.272 fastest lap while Huertas dealt with Can Oncu trying to take fifth place from him. Can Oncu passed Huertas only to lose the front and take Navarro out, gifting Huertas fourth place, the crash happening from behind to in front of him. The crash was put under investigation as Booth-Amos took his long lap penalty, returning in sixth place.

Adrian Huertas, unphased by the crash in front of him, set a 1'43.053 fastest lap on lap four. Manzi led Montella with Huertas a second behind. Can Oncu, back in twenty fifth place, was handed a double long lap penalty, but as he's in last place, it won't affect his race.

At half race distance, over eight laps completed of seventeen, Stefano Manzi and Yari Montella were over a second ahead of Adrian Huertas and Valentin Debise. Can Oncu completed both of his long lap penalties and set about chasing a fast lap for grid position for tomorrow's race.

Valentin Debise had a technical issue on lap twelve, another piece of bad luck playing into the hands of champion-elect Huertas. Federico Caricasulo, four laps down, set a 1'43.027 fastest lap.

Stefano Manzi set a 1'42.964 fastest lap on lap thirteen of seventeen, almost two seconds clear of Montella and Huertas. Marcel Schroetter in fourth place fended off the advances of Lucas Mahias with Tom Booth-Amos more than two seconds behind the pair. Caricasulo in twenty fourth place, still four laps down, responded to Manzi's fastest lap with a 1'42.568, provisional pole for tomorrow.

The penultimate lap. Stefano Manzi led by over two seconds with Adrian Huertas closing on second-placed Yari Montella, inexplicably looking for a way past when he held the title in his hands, and he cooled off at the start of the last lap, dropping to a second from Montella ,much to the relief of his team.

Stefano Manzi won by two seconds over Yari Montella but third-placed Adrian Huertas comfortably took the 2024 World Supersport title.

The 2021 Supersport 300 champion claimed the 2024 World Supersport title, the youngest winner of the series and the first Spaniard to take the title.

Huertas's celebration was less convoluted than Razgatlioglu's, with him miming shooting an arrow and getting a t-shirt over his suit with just gold boots, gloves and a helmet to accessorise. He got a gold number one on the front of his Ducati and headed back to Parc Fermé.

Stefano Manzi's win put him sixteen points ahead of Yari Montella in the championship, with the fight for second place to be decided in the last race of thew year tomorrow. Fourth place in the championship is also to be decided tomorrow, with Valentin Debise a single point ahead of Marcel Schroetter.

Federico Caricasulo and Can Oncu start race two in the top two spots with Stefano Manzi in third place.
