2024 Jerez World Superbike Superpole Result: Critical Yellow Flags and New Lap record

By Jared Earle | Sat, 19/Oct/2024 - 09:23

Fifteen minutes of the last Superpole qualifying session of the year would determine the positions for this afternoon's race where the championship can be decided. With two short six hundred metre straights, the 4.4km track promises lots of action from the twenty seven riders qualifying to race.

Toprak Razgatlioglu and Michael van der Mark headed out together to help each other but Andrea Iannone joined in on the out lap. Razgatlioglu signalled to the riders to sort themselves out and the BMW pair were left alone to get their flying laps in. Razgatlioglu set a 1'38.306 ahead of van der Mark but Alex Lowes beat it with a 1'38.302 on his first timed lap. Nicolo Bulega was further back on his first lap and he rattled in a 1'38.141 lap record. Lowes and Razgatlioglu pitted in for new rubber while Bulega tried for a second lap that ended up being the second quickest lap set.

With six minutes remaining, the riders ended their tea breaks and tried out their qualifying tyres one last time.

Former lap record holder Jonathan Rea was the first rider to set a time and he could only set a lap to get him thirteenth place before he crashed at turn six, unintentionally ruining almost everyone's fresh rubber with a yellow flag.

Nicolo Bulega was not caught in yellow flag shenanigans and he was able to make the most of his go-fast tyre to move the lap record to a 1'37.596. Razgatlioglu on his second lap was just six tenths off Bulega's bonkers time with Alex Lowes behind him. Danilo Petrucci was fourth quickest with an invigorated Iker Lecuona and Andrea Locatelli rounding out the second row.

Xavi Vierge headed the third row ahead of Michael van der Mark and Michael Ruben Rinaldi. Alvaro Bautista and Jonathan Rea qualified in fifteenth and sixteenth places.

With the championship contenders first and second quickest, the title could be decided this afternoon if Razgatlioglu can end the day thirty seven points ahead of Bulega. With a forty six point lead, this means a podium place gives Razgatlioglu the title. Bulega needs to score more than nine points more than Razgatlioglu to keep the fight alive for another day.
