2024 Estoril World Superbike Superpole Result: Wet Track But No Rain

By Jared Earle | Sat, 12/Oct/2024 - 10:26

Saturday morning was windy and the Superpole was declared a wet session for fifteen minutes of qualifying with the bikes' red lights on. A championship could be decided this weekend and the weather will almost certainly play its part. Without falling rain, the track should dry out over the session.

Toprak Razgatlioglu and Andrea Iannone held off for a couple of minutes before heading out. Jonathan Rea opened the session with a 1'54.299 as Alex Lowes crashed out at turn eight on an equally fast lap. Before setting a lap, Razgatlioglu pitted in as Rea set a 1'53.366, a second quicker than second-placed Alvaro Bautista.

Michael van der Mark climbed up to second quickest but Danilo Petrucci stepped up with a 1'52.640. Razgatlioglu snuck up to third place only for Nicole Bulega to push him down a spot with under three minutes left.

Alvaro Bautista crashed out with two minutes remaining, sitting in seventh place. Razgatlioglu moved up to second place, splitting Petrucci and Rea, but Rea came out of the pits with some fire in his belly.

As the flag came out, Razgatlioglu was aiming at pole position and he set a 1'52.430, but Petrucci was on a fast lap behind him. Petrucci lost four tenths of a second in the last sector, sliding the rear on a tight corner, and Razgatlioglu held on to pole position.

Toprak Razgatlioglu took pole position by under a tenth of a second from Danilo Petrucci and half a second ahead of Jonathan Rea. Andrea Locatelli headed the second row with Nicolo Bulega and Michael van der Mark alongside. A British third row was made up of Sam Lowes, Tax Mackenzie and Alex Lowes.

Riders are anticipating a dry race this afternoon.
