2024 Cremona World Superbike Superpole Result: Yellow Flags, Penalties And Missing Riders

By Jared Earle | Sat, 21/Sep/2024 - 09:20

After an injury-filled weekend in France, World Superbike misses Championship leader Toprak Razgatlioglu and six time world champion Jonathan Rea. Reigning world champion Alvaro Bautista is carrying an injury this weekend, opening up the chances for others to take control of the races, but both Remy Gardner and Danilo Petrucci have lost three places in the first race for slow riding on the racing line yesterday to make their job a little harder.

Andrea Iannone set the first fastest lap with a 1'28.263, half a second ahead of Nicolo Bulega, Garrett Gerloff and Danilo Petrucci. Niccolo Canepa crashed Rea's Yamaha before setting a lap. After losing his first lap to yellow flags, Alex Lowes snuck up to second place, over half a second off Iannone before joining the other front-runners in the pits for fresh tyres. Markus Reiterberger put Razgatlioglu's BMW in eighth place before the break. Alex Lowes then had his fast lap deleted before the riders headed out, losing his other lap to a yellow flag.

With clear track, and no yellow flags, Alex Lowes reclaimed second place, under a tenth of a second off Iannone, only to have Bulega knock him down one place followed by Petrucci taking second place off Bulega.

Iannone set a 1'28.068 but Bulega took control with a 1'27.953 before crashing out at the start of his cool-down lap, losing the front into turn two, bringing out the yellow flags. Alex Lowes also crashed after his fast lap. After the flags were cleared, riders had spent all their tyres and the chequered flag came out as a formality to end the session.

Nicolo Bulega headed an all-Ducati front row with Andrea Iannone and Danilo Petrucci joining him, but Petrucci's penalty promotes Alex Lowes to the front row for race one. Andrea Locatelli and Sam Lowes also benefit from Petrucci's penalty for race one, moving up a spot on the second row.

With yellow flags deleting a lot of quick laps, the third row ended up with Xavi Vierge and Iker Lecuona being joined by Bradley Ray. Alvaro Bautista ended the session in thirteenth place.
