2024 Aragon World Supersport Race One Result: Hard Passing Is The Norm

By Jared Earle | Sat, 28/Sep/2024 - 14:11

World Supersport was fifteen laps of MotorLand Aragon.

Adrian Huertas led into turn one, ahead of Yari Montella and Jorge Navarro with Lucas Mahias, Glenn van Straalen and Valentin Debise making it three Yamahas behind three Ducatis with Can Oncu behind. Oncu took sixth place before the second lap but van Straalen took it back into turn one. After two laps, the fastest lap was set by Stefano Manzi who climbed top to eighth place with his 1'53.227, two seconds off the lead.

Debise took fourth place into turn nine, half a second off the podium Ducatis, and Stefano Manzi once again set the fastest lap, a 1'53.011, under two seconds off the lead. Manzi then took seventh place from van Straalen and closing on sixth-placed Oncu. Huertas and Montella recorded identical laps on lap four. Debise took third place as Oncu took fifth from Mahias. Tom Booth-Amos crashed out of ninth place on lap six while Valentin Debise set a 1'52.807 fastest lap.

Debise sat in third place, under a quarter of a second off Huertas and Montella with the leading trio three quarters of a second ahead of Navarro, Manzi and Oncu with Manzi lapping quicker than the four riders ahead of him. Manzi was unable to pass Navarro at the end of lap eight, but he did set a fastest lap of 1'52.797 and take fourth place into turn one of lap nine.

Manzi closed a few tenths on Debise, but Debise responded by turning under Montella into turns eight and nine and Manzi squeezed under on turn fifteen to push Montella off the podium until turn one of lap eleven where Montella took third place back. Huertas took advantage of the fighting behind to eke out a few tenths in the lead. Manzi tucked into the clean air behind Montella down the backs straight but couldn't make a pass work.

With three laps remaining, Huertas had a one second lead over Debise until Montella took second place back into turn one of lap thirteen of fifteen. Manzi had no trouble catching and passing Debise before the back straight and he started the penultimate lap in a good position to harass Montella and pass him into turn seven, with Debise following up into turn eight to push Montella off the podium.

The last lap started with Huertas over two seconds clear of Manzi, Debise and Montella with Navarro four seconds further back. Mahias and Oncu were one and two seconds behind. Debise hounded Manzi the entire lap, slipping in behind on the back straight and outbreaking him into turn sixteen. Manzi held a tighter line through the long corner and held on to second place.

Adrian Huertas won by almost two seconds with Stefano Manzi holding off Valentin Debise to round out the podium. Yari Montella was under a second off the podium with Jorge Navarro over four seconds behind him.

Huertas extends his championship lead, with the two Yamahas joining him on the podium putting his title rival Montella further back. Manzi joins Montella fifty five points off Huertas and Debise passes Marcel Schroetter by ten points for fourth place in the championship.
